Modern dentistry could be described as Tooth Conserving or Minimally Invasive. This has been made possible by the advent of tooth adhesives. Before this recent technology much healthy tooth structure had to be removed for decades-old metal filling procedures. The result many years later is often a need for crowns and root canals as the weakened teeth break.

Modern techniques are not as yet routinely taught in Dental Schools. Your dentist has to embark on a yearly quest for post-doctoral continuing education to be able to adopt these advances. As an example, one world renowned educator Dr. Bertolotti. My staff and I have attended his one, two and three day seminars over thirty times through the years.

As an example: Just a couple of years ago in a lecture the Deptartment Chair of a Midwest dental school stated he did not allow students to use decay-finder stain because they could not distinguish pink from dark red. Decay-finder stain is the single greatest advance for dentists to ensure decay removal before placing any of your restorations, making them far more long-lasting.

Don't be afraid to inquire about your dentist's continuing education study and teaching history. Study the Web. Much of the information a patient will need is easily accessed online. Move away from non-conservative and metal containing restorations. Talk to your dentist and ask to see pictures of your teeth.

Today it is more critical than ever to find an innovative, continually educated dentist that is able to save more good tooth structure for your future use. Much of the technology availablee today was not possible even a few years ago. The future of dental technology promises to improve patient outcomes with less stress (shorter appointments) and less cost due to longevity of the restorations.

This is all very good news for patients.
